So this video started going around my facebook today, with about a dozen of my female friends sharing the link with comments like, and “Everyone needs to see this”, and “All girls should watch this,” and “This made me cry.” And I’m not trying to shame those girls! I definitely understand why they would do so. And I don’t want to be a killjoy. But as I clicked the link and started watching the video, I started to feel a slight sense of discomfort. Answer: no harm reduction services for drug users, lack of political will, criminalization, stigma and discrimination, and little to no access to medicines. All that? It’s no wonder the rate continues to climb, and it’s unacceptable.

Latest reports say that In Eastern Europe & Central Asia, HIV infection rates are increasing faster than anywhere in the world, and 4 of 5 of these cases are among people who inject drugs.

Drug users and other criminalized groups at risk for HIV—like sex workers and men who have sex with men—are frequently viewed by governments as political and social embarrassments that are best ignored.
